The Bibiani District Court has remanded into police custody a mason for allegedly biting off the upper lips of his ex-girlfriend at Atronsu in the Western North Region of Ghana.
Loris Afful aka Kofi Atta, 48, is said to have gone to his ex-girlfriend’s room to see reconciliation. The woman, who did not take kindly to it, ordered Afful out of her room.
This resulted in a fight and Afful bit his girlfriend’s upper lips.
Charged with causing harm, Afful pleaded not guilty before the court presided over by Mr Lord Delvin Essandoh.
The court soon after remanding Afful into lawful custody, ordered Chief Inspector B. O. Agyemang, who held brief of Chief Inspector Fred Amoa, to file their disclosures within five days.
It adjourned the matter to January 22, 2025, for a Case Management Conference.
Giving reasons for remanding Afful, the court held that it considered the facts of the case, the safety of the victim and the possibility of interference in the investigations.
It also assured that the matter would be speedily tried.
The prosecution’s case is that Lucy Opoku, the complainant is a 47-year-old labourer. Lucy and Afful are residents of Sefwi Atronsu, near Awaso.
The court heard that the complainant or victim and the accused were in a relationship for two years.
The prosecution said sometime in October 2024, the accused and complainant abrogated the relationship, and the complainant travelled to Accra and returned on December 29, 2024.
According to the prosecutor, Afful, knowing that the complainant had returned from her trip, started making advances for a “comeback” but the complainant kept ignoring him.
Chief Inspector Amoa said on January 8, 2025, at about 9:00 pm, the complainant returned from town and found her door open and to her surprise, she saw Afful sleeping in her room.
Chief Inspector Amoa said the complainant did not question Afful about how he got into her room because Afful knew where she kept her key.
The prosecution said the complainant told Afful to leave her room but he refused.
“Complainant tried to pull him out of the room, resulting in a fight between them. The complainant suddenly felt a burning sensation on her upper lips and noticed blood oozing from it.” Prosecution said.
The prosecution said the complainant realised that Afful had bitten off her upper lips.
The court was told that after the act, Afful left for his house.
On January 9, 2025, a report was made to the Police and Afful was arrested and in his caution statement, he admitted the offence.
