Mastercard Foundation Scholars at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology have renovated a six-unit classroom block of the Wiamoase Salvation Army Primary ‘B’ School.
They also furnished the facility with one hundred dual desks.
The project was funded by the scholars at the cost of 25,000 US dollars.
The initiative forms part of the Scholars’ International Day of Service.
The day is set aside for Scholars around the globe to take the time to give-back to their communities.
President of the Scholars Council, Diing Diing William Chol was happy the project will improve teaching and learning in the school.
“As scholars, we appreciate the value of education as a tool to societal emancipation. It is our hope that our commitment to this refurbishment will also revitalize the learning soul of the students especially in this challenging Covid-19 pandemic and spur on any waning soul.
“Covid-19 has changed a lot of things, our sitting arrangement in class, and our social gathering,” he said.
Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme is meant to nurture the next generation of ethical leaders and change-makers.
In those past years, scholars have been engaged in various humanitarian and community initiatives.
In 2016, the scholars taught SHS students how to make tie and dye, liquid soaps and cake soaps at Toase, Ejisuman, and Kumasi High School SHSs.
They also undertook blood donation exercise to support Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Blood bank, and commissioned a mechanised bore-hole at Asakraka community.
Last year, they donated 5 Wheelchairs, 5 Hospital ward screens, a delivery bed, and a patient monitor to the Ejisu Government Hospital.
Programme lead, Kofi Ohene Owusu-Daaku hinted women will form the majority of next year’s intake.
“Next year about 200 will leave and will take 300. We’ll make sure that 70 percent of them will be women.
“Within that broad thing, 25 percent will be for persons who are displaced, that is refugees and 10 percent will be people with partial impairment, i.e partially blind, etc.,” he added.
