President Mills is meeting with Muslim religious leaders here in Accra to seek their views on how to promote unity and development in the country.
It is the second time this month that the president is meeting religious leaders. He first met with Christian leaders.
In a short remark ahead of a closed door meeting, president Mills re-emphasized the important roles religious leaders play in the country’s development agenda.
According to him, that role is not the sole responsibility of politicians.
“Our religious leaders are the ones who mould the character of our people – a nation consists of people – and we must get the right kind of people if we are going to develop,” he said.
The president said politicians deal with the physical aspects of the nation with the religious leaders handling the spiritual needs of the country and “I have no apologies to make to anybody if I say that as far as I’m concerned, the spiritual is more powerful than the physical.”
He maintained that a nation that is not founded on religious values cannot build a strong physical structure.
President Mills said the nation appears to have abandoned very important spiritual values. “In the first place, our country is too polarized, too divided, and we are told that a house that is divided cannot stand.”
“We may have our differences, but please let’s deal with each other in a way that will promote peace and harmony in our country,” he appealed.
