President John Evans Atta Mills has paid glowing tribute to the gold winning Black Satellites of Ghana, promising to announce a “lasting” reward at “an appropriate time.”
He said the reward due them should reflect the enormity of the success chalked up, adding an “attractive package” will be announced after thorough consultations with stake holders.
He made the comment at a short ceremony in the Castle when the Satellites formally presented the trophies won in the just ended U-20 tournament in, Cairo, Egypt to him.
Apart from winning the trophy, Satellites’ striker Dominic Adiyiah was crowned man of the tournament and the goal king which came with a golden ball and a golden boot.
The President said the Satellites’ victory was an indication that Africa is ready to unite, given the huge support and commendation from the African countries.
He singled out Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak for his open support to the Satellites which he said encouraged the Satellites to victory.
That victory he said is only a precursor to another by their senior colleagues in the 2010 World Cup to be held in South Africa, and pledged his continued support to the activities of the FA in order to realise that dream.
With determination, hard work and presence of God anything can be done, he said
Whilst commending the GFA for their efforts, the president said the nation must strive to resist parochial issues that divide the ranks of the Ghanaian.
Skipper of the Satellites Dede Ayew expressed his profound gratitude to Ghanaians for the “arrival party” organized in their favour.
He formally introduced his colleagues to the president and the vice president who then took turns to have a rare hand shake with the two most powerful people in the country.
The short ceremony was graced by eminent football personalities, members of the diplomatic corps, as well as Satellites management team and members of the GFA.
