The Minister for Water Resources, Works and Housing has directed Management of the Ghana Water Company Limited to stop its intended shutdown of the Kpong water treatment plant.

The directive comes a day after the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission threatened to sanction the water company if it goes ahead with its shutdown in the face of the acute water shortage that has hit many parts of the capital Accra.

The Water Company wanted to shut down the Kpong treatment plant for regular maintenance but the decision may worsen an already precarious situation.

The sector Minister, Collins Dauda who is currently touring the Kpong Water Treatment Plant said there will be no shutdown until work on the Weija treatment plant is over.

The Minister will also head to Weija  to ascertain the progress of work there, Joy FM's Beatrice  Adu reported.

Accra and its environs have been without water for almost one week now following the breakdown of the Weija treatment plant.

Despite assurances by the Water Company that supply will resume Thursday, the taps still run dry.

This has resulted in residents walking long distances in search of water every morning.

Joy News’ Beatrice Adu has been speaking to some residents at Kokomlemle and Accra New town and they complain the situation is worrying.

Adu saw long winding queue of yellow gallons  meters away from a source of water as owners scramble in desperate search for water.

The residents, including women and children say they have been in the queue for several hours and are waiting for their turn.
