Former Chief of Staff Kwadwo Mpiani says he is not aware he faces any charge of causing financial loss to the state as being reported in some sections of the media.
Mr Mpiani explains that although he was invited by the Criminal Investigations Department of the police last week on his role in Ghana International Airlines (GIA), he has not been served with any summons inviting him to court.
According him, he would not hesitate to appear in court if he is formally charged.
“It is news to me that I am being told that I have refused or I didn’t [go to] court. I have not been charged by the police.
“If they charge me and I know the charge then I’m sure I’ll tell my lawyers what to do. I know from my heart [and] my conscience that I haven’t done anything wrong. I don’t know what they are going to charge me with,” Mr Mpiani told Joy News’ Midday news.
An Accra Fast Track High Court today adjourned a case in which the former Chief of Staff and several others have been charged with causing financial loss of various sums to the state.
The court adjourned hearing on Tuesday because Mr Mpiani and three others facing charges did not appear in court.
Mr Mpiani stands trial with former Roads and Transport Minister, Dr Richard Anane, former Deputy Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, Dr Anthony Akoto Osei, and former Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Mr Sammy Crabbe.
Mr Crabbe, who is also vice president of the GIA, represents the minority shareholders in the company. He has been charged with four counts including stealing and causing financial loss to the state.
He is alleged to have withdrawn $1.7 million from the government’s account on June 27, 2005 without approval from the government, the majority stakeholders whilst Dr Anane is alleged to have misled Cabinet into approving a partnership with Ghana International Airlines at a time when GIA did not exist.
Lawyer for Sammy Crabbe, Kwame Boateng, told Joy News his client is innocent of all the charges.
“We didn’t get the opportunity of reading the facts of the case but from the investigations and what we have gathered…what the state is saying is that due to certain actions and inaction of Sammy Crabbe, together with other people who are out,” he stated.
According to him his client will plead not guilty in court on Wednesday the case would be called.
Meanwhile the former Chief of Staff, Kwadwo Mpiani has served notice he is schedule to meet with CID officials at 2:00pm today following call he received on Monday from the officials requesting a meeting with him.
