A 31-year old widow says the timely report on her plight on the Multimedia platforms and subsequent response from the public saved her life as well as her children.
Salatu Alhassan says she, at a point, contemplated suicide by poisoning the entire family of four, after their home was ravaged by fire at Breman –Nkontwima, in Kumasi.
Salatu, a koko seller, was out serving breakfast to her numerous customers when the fire started.
Her kids were in school then, so there was no casualty, but she lost bags of grains she had stored for her koko business.
The family has since been compelled to live without a roof over their heads. They sleep under a mango tree, at the mercy of the weather.
She then decided that they are better off dead than to live in such dehumanizing condition.
However, after Nhyira News carried a report on the family's plight, the public responded swiftly with food and logistic aid.
Thanks to philanthropists, their apartment has been renovated, though without bed.
A piece of plywood placed on the floor now serves a good purpose.
Even then, Salatu remains grateful to donors and, especially, the Multimedia Group platforms.
Meanwhile, an Accra based philanthropist who wants to remain anonymous has donated 1,000 Ghana cedis for the family’s upkeep.
The presentation was made on behalf of the donor by the Kumasi office of the Multimedia Group.
Two officials of the company who made the presentation were touched by Salatu’s plight.
Emotional officers appealed for more public support for the family.
“As a woman, putting myself in her place, I feel very sorry for her (Salatu) because no woman would want to sleep with her children under a mango tree. So we want to thank those who donated but I don’t think that is enough now”. One official said.
Salatu is full of gratitude for the donor. She says she will invest the money in her porridge business, to enable her fend for the family.
