The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) is warning residents around the Weija Dam at the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region to vacate the area to avoid an imminent disaster.
According to NADMO, the dam’s water level has reached a point that has left them with no option than to open it for the excess water to spill over.
The National Coordinator of NADMO, Kofi Portuphy, described the current state of the water level as dangerous.
He explained that management could open the dam any time soon due to the large volume of water streaming into the dam, largely due to the persistent rainfall at Aburi Mountains, the dam’s main source of water.
Speaking in an interview with Asempa News, Mr. Portuphy reiterated that the water level is above the usual point marked by the management that alerts them to open the dam.
He stressed that the management of the dam has already warned that when the water level reaches 48 feet, the dam will collapsed, but as at now, the water level has gone beyond 46 feet, yet some recalcitrant residents are still living near the dam.
A team of personnel from the NADMO, Ghana Water Company Limited, Accra Metropolitan Assembly and Ga South Municipal Assembly are going round the vicinity warning those who have their houses close to the dam to vacate them.
They are also warning those who have started putting up structures to put a stop to them to avoid the looming disaster.
Asked when exactly the dam would be opened, Mr. Portuphy said it could be today (Thursday) or tomorrow.
Those along the Densu delta (Weija) who would be affected the most are Bortianor and Otordjor.
