The Northern Regional Secretariat of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has warned members of the party seeking leadership positions not to campaign negatively against sitting Members of Parliament in their constituencies.
The secretariat said nominations were not yet opened for positions and those playing underground politics to get sitting MPs out were seriously undermining the goodwill of the party, especially at the grassroots level.
Alhaji Abdulai Harruna Friday, Northern Regional Secretary of the party in a statement issued in Tamale said reports from some constituencies in the region indicated that some people were embarking on negative propaganda against sitting MPs so that they could replace them.
He appealed to them to stop their actions so as not to weaken the strength of the NDC at those areas and that the timing was wrong since it would give undue advantage to opponents.
Alhaji Friday called on members to rather forge ahead to promote the healthy growth of the party at all levels, unity and cohesion to ensure massive victory in 2008.
"It must be made clear that the party has not yet opened nominations for Parliamentary Candidature, therefore, individuals carrying out this can be said to be a calculated attempt to break the rank and file of the party in the region", he said.
He called on all branch executives to ignore such people for now and report their actions to the regional secretariat and that the secretariat would invoke the necessary party constitutional sanction to those found culpable.
