A member of the National Media Commission (NMC) is calling for a national conference of all relevant interest groups to find lasting solutions to problems bedevilling the state broadcaster – Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC).
Speaking on Multi TV’s PM EXPRESS show on Wednesday, legal practitioner Akoto Ampaw stressed the need to adequately fund GBC to serve the public.
Mr. Akoto Ampaw said politicians will continue to interfere with the management of GBC if the process of raising its budget is not completely divorced from government ministries with full supervision given to the NMC.
On his part, the General Secretary of the Independent Broadcasters Association, Gerald Ankrah, shared the view that the public should be educated to appreciate GBC’s unique role in the era of a multitude of private commercial media outlets.
GBC has over the years faced management problems and there are also suggestions it should be privatised because it is unable to live up to current competition.
But Mr. Ampaw and Ankrah agreed that would be a dangerous move. Rather they want a redefinition of GBC’s mission to exclude commercial activities.
