The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) said it is expecting a possible price increase in petroleum products, following continuous rise in the prices of crude oil on the world market which has soared over one hundred dollars a barrel.
Head of the Public Relations of the NPA Steven Larbi said his outfit is currently monitoring the trend on the world market at a close pace, so a decision can be taken in the coming weeks.
The unrest in oil rich Arab countries, especially Libya, has disrupted oil production causing a significant change in oil prices.
Mr. Larbi said the effects of the increase on the Ghanaian market may not be felt but the final decision to increase the prices will be taken after negotiations with government are over.
“We all have to brace ourselves for an upward increase in the price but it depends on government’s ability to bail the people,” he stated.
Government as part of its plans to offset the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) debt increased prices of petroleum products in January by 30%.
The increase attracted various criticisms from the public who were of the view that government had breached its promise to reduce prices of petroleum products.
However the upward trend in the prices on the world market and a possible effect on Ghana’s economy must signal Ghanaians to brace themselves for another increment in the prices of fuel products.
But NPA in an interview with Adom News is hopeful that government will absorb some of the costs if prices were increased, to relieve Ghanaians of the accompanying hardships.
“It is only the government who can help us so that we do not feel the impact.” Mr. Larbi said.
