The Ghana Online Drivers Union has threatened to stage a public demonstration if platform operators and key stakeholders fail to engage them in meaningful dialogue.
This comes after the union rejected a directive from the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) to implement a 15% reduction in transport fares.
The union insists it will not comply, citing unresolved issues including high booking fees, lack of regulation, and the absence of formal recognition.
Speaking to Joy Business, President of the Ghana Online Drivers Union, Francis Tengey, stated that drivers have been sidelined for too long and are prepared to act if their concerns continue to be ignored.
"If the platform operators go ahead with any unilateral action, we will advise ourselves and embark on some form of demonstration," he warned.
Beyond rejecting the fare reduction, the union is also calling on the Minister for Transport to introduce regulatory measures to govern the online ride-hailing sector.
They argue that the current lack of oversight allows digital platforms to operate unchecked, often to the detriment of drivers.
“The time has come for real regulation in this space. We are calling on the Minister of Transport to recognize the union and implement policies that ensure fairness and sustainability in the industry,” Mr. Tengey added.
The union’s stance highlights growing tensions within the ride-hailing industry, as drivers struggle with rising operational costs, platform-imposed fees, and limited representation in critical industry decisions.
