Subject: Concerns over the privatisation of power distribution and lack of Civil Society Representation
Dear Hon. Abu Jinapor,
We, the undersigned, wish to express our opposition to the proposed privatisation of Ghana's Power Distribution sector and the exclusion of civil society from the seven-member Committee overseeing the process.
The exclusion of civil society organizations, consumer protection groups, and Labour Unions from this Committee raises serious concerns about transparency and accountability. These groups represent a wide cross-section of citizens and consumers who rely on this service. A decision of such magnitude requires broad-based consultations to ensure that national interests are prioritised over profit motives.
We urge the Ministry of Energy to:
- Halt the privatisation process until an inclusive and transparent national dialogue is held;
- Include civil society representatives on the Committee;
- Disclose all reports and agreements related to the privatisation plan;
- Explore alternative models that enhance efficiency while maintaining public control.
Ghana's energy sector is of critical importance, and it should not be left in private hands without proper public scrutiny.
We trust the Ministry will reconsider its current approach and ensure a more participatory decision-making process.
Yours sincerely,
