The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has announced the commencement of a major infrastructure project at its Afienya Substation, aimed at improving power reliability and meeting the growing energy demands of the Greater Accra Region.

Starting Tuesday, February 3, 2026, engineers will begin a five-week decommissioning and installation process to replace an ageing transformer with a state-of-the-art, high-capacity unit.

The centrepiece of this project is the removal of the existing 50/66 MVA power transformer, which has neared its operational limit due to the rapid residential and industrial expansion in Afienya.

In its place, GRIDCo will install a significantly larger 120/145 MVA transformer.

This upgrade more than doubles the substation’s current capacity, ensuring that the grid can handle the increased load from new businesses and housing developments without the risk of equipment failure or local overloads.

Recognising the concerns of local residents regarding power outages during such massive works, GRIDCo has assured the public that the lights will stay on.

In a joint strategy with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), technical teams have rerouted power flows and established contingency feeds to prevent any disruptions during the five-week construction period.

“Our engineers, in collaboration with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have put in place all necessary measures to ensure that the transformer upgrade work does not cause any disruption of supply to consumers,” the company stated in its official release on Monday, February 2, 2026.

The Afienya enclave has become a critical hub for the Greater Accra Region's expansion, serving as a gateway for both residential commuters and light manufacturing industries.

This investment by GRIDCo is part of a broader national effort to modernise the transmission backbone to support Ghana's industrialisation goals and the growing digital economy.
