The Kumasi police has shot and killed a suspected armed robber, Kwame Poku, also known as Kwame Isaac, who together with other colleagues now at large engaged the police in a shoot out.
Ashanti Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police Frank Adu Poku said in a briefing to journalists that around midnight on April 8, policemen on duty at Santasi mounted a road block to apprehend the armed robbers following a tip off that they were travelling in a KIA Pride taxi cab with registration number AS 3681Y.
Shortly afterwards the vehicle pulled up at the check point but refused to stop when ordered to do so compelling the police to pursue the vehicle.
DCOP Adu Poku said the armed robbers opened fire on the police, who returned it, leading to the death of Kwame Opoku, who was in the driving seat. His accomplices managed to escape.
Items retrieved from the vehicle included two locally manufactured pistols, three knives, scissors, a screw driver and an amulet. Investigations to locate and apprehend the other occupants of the vehicle continue.
