Some callers into Joy FM's Super Morning Show on Wednesday morning added their voices to the claims of widespread insecurity in the country.
Most of the callers blamed the spate of armed robbery and petty crime on the inefficiencies of the police in the country.
Some callers who proffered their opinion on the strategies that the police administration should use to check the high rate of armed attacks and violent crimes, advised that the police should be well armed to intimidate the criminals on the roads.
Others said the absence of adequate security on the country’s highways is a major cause of the increasing robberies.
These callers proposed that the police increases its presence on the roads to keep commuters safer as it is becoming a nightmare to ply these roads.
Other callers suggested very extreme measures in making the country safe. Amerley from Kumasi and George from Tema encouraged the police to “kill” all the robbers on contact while Philip who phoned in from Madina called for the establishment of vigilante groups all over the country to fight the menace.
But Police Superintendent Kwesi Fori disagreed that the country is unsafe.
In an interview with Super Morning Show host, Bernard Nassara Saibu, Supt. Kwesi Fori said “looking at security in totality in the country, the police administration can confidently say that we are enjoying a peaceful environment. The country is safe. There is no threat, you know, to the peace and security of this country.”
He said there has been a decrease in the general crime rate in the country compared to the period between January and August 2010.
He explained that the police had instituted various projects and techniques in combating crime in the country especially for communities in developing areas, adding that the police administration is working with communities all over the country to flush out these criminals.
Supt. Kwesi Fori further enjoined citizens to play their part to rid the country of these miscreants.
“It is the responsibility of every citizen in this country, whether you are a citizen or resident, to assist the police in the fight against crime. It is our collective responsibility. The police cannot do it alone and it requires that we join hands to fight crime,” he sermonized.
On how the service generates the crime statistics in the country, Kwesi Fori pointed out that it only puts together data collected from reported cases, saying “we have an outfit, an outfit at the CID headquarters that collates and put all these figures up by liaising with all police information throughout the country and it is based on the crime that has been reported to the police.”
Even though Supt. Kwesi Fori admitted that the service lacks enough logistics to adequately fight crime, he pointed out that the government and other corporate bodies were assisting in equipping the service with the necessary tools in order to be effective.
He therefore urged city and town planners to properly plan communities and provide street names, house numbers and good roads to reduce police response time and to make the police more effective in carrying out their duties.
