Supporters of the National Democratic Congress in Adenta, a suburb of Accra are angry with the police for scuttling their intended demonstration against the Member of Parliament Ben Adu Asare and the Metropolitan Chief Executive of the area, Nubyl Kakra Vanlare.
Victor Ametepe, spokesperson of the group told Joy FM’s Yaa Asamoah they had informed the police seven clear days of the intended demonstration and are surprised the police will not oblige.
On Wednesday the supporters were met with heavy police presence with water cannons and tear gas ready to stop the intended demonstration.
One person was arrested and later released for what the District Police Commander, Stephen Ahiatepor said was a “verbal attack” on him.
DSP Ahiatepor said they had informed the demonstrators to reschedule their intended demonstration until such a time that the police will be able to provide adequate security.
When Yaa Asamoah asked him how the police was able to assemble men to crash the demonstration if they did not have the numbers to protect the demonstrators, the commander said emergency situations call for emergency reactions.
The angry supporters accuse the MCE and MP of doing very little to arrest the unemployment rate and poor sanitation problems in the area.
They have resorted to the demonstration because the two have failed to listen to their grievances.
Victor Ametepe said they will present a petition to the president on the matter.
