Mr Ike Afeanyi Donkor, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) for the Central Regional Co-ordinating Council, has denied reports that those who prevented Friends of Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings (FONKAR) members from entering the rehabilitated Town Hall for a meeting with the former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, were known bodyguards of the Central Regional Minister, Mrs Ama Benyiwa-Doe. He told the Daily Graphic that the Regional Minister was out of town and did not know anything about the former First Lady’s visit. Information gathered from NDC constituency quarters indicated that the executive prevented the entourage from using the place since they (executive) claimed they did not have foreknowledge of the meeting. Information from sources in the NDC indicated that FONKAR had booked the place in the name of a private group for a party. However, when they clad the place with party colours and paraphernalia the executives stepped in to prevent them from using the place in the name of the NDC. There was a clash between FONKAR and constituency members of the National Democratic Congress in Cape Coast at the weekend. The incident occurred when members of the NDC prevented FONKAR members in several buses from entering the newly rehabilitated Town Hall for the meeting with the former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings. Mrs Rawlings came to the constituency on a 'thank you' mission, but her supporters were prevented from entering the Town Hall. Macho men from the NDC were said to have invaded the Town Hall and threatened the FONKAR members who would enter the premises. According to the Central Regional Police Public Relations Officer, the police had information that there was near commotion between the two groups so some officers were sent there immediately to ensure order. He also said the police allowed the FONKAR members into the courtyard of the Town Hall, but the caretaker of the hall was nowhere to be found. The former first lady, therefore, had to address the supporters briefly in the courtyard after which she left, but promised to come back at a later date. Mr Asaaba said nobody was arrested, adding that the police had to use diplomacy and tact as they were dealing with members of one group.
