Scores of New Patriotic Party supporters Thursday evening threatened to free a member of a vigilante group who had been arrested for his alleged assault of the CEO of the Tamale Teaching Hospital.

The incensed youth marched to the premises of the Regional Police Headquarters to demand the immediate release of Baba Alhassan.

But for the timely intervention of the Youth Organiser of the party Mohammed Alhassan Gaana, there would have been mayhem.

The Youth Organiser together with other members of the party convinced the angry youth to stand down their intended attack with a promise to have Baba Alhassan bailed tomorrow.

The incensed youth agreed but promised to return on Friday if their demands are not met, Joy News' Tamale correspondent reported.

Narrating how the incident occurred, the correspondent said scores of party supporters massed up at the Jubilee Park in Tamale Thursday evening in protest over the arrest of Baba Alhassan.

The youth numbering over 60 moved to the Regional Coordinating Council cursing and chanting. They later moved to the Regional Police Headquarters by which time the numbers had increased.

There was no policeman on sight, the correspondent reported. The youth had to be spoken to by the NPP youth organiser to stand down.

The supporters do not understand why Baba Alhassan must be picked up by the police. He had led a group of miscreants to attack the Tamale Teaching Hospital on Monday.

The group entered the office of the Hospital CEO Dr David Zaawumya Akolbila and walked him out of office after accusing him of corruption and mismanagement.

That was not the first time hooligans and vigilante groups had attacked the hospital and other allied state facilities in the country.

In 2017, members of the Kandahar Forces, a vigilante group affiliated to the NPP attacked the same hospital and its CEO.

The recent attack led to a strike by health workers who have since called off the strike.

The health workers, however, gave the ultimatum that the police must arrest the remaining members of the vigilante group who invaded the hospital or they will advise themselves.

With the threat of violence by the NPP youth, it remains to be seen what action will be taken by the police, the hospital staff, party executives and government officials.
