A fun-filled afternoon turned tragic at Bibiani Zongo in the Western North Region after a 2nd-year Senior High School student drowned in the Amponsah Dam.
The victim has been identified as 19-year-old Elisha Akanlawen, who went swimming with some mates.
Speaking to Adom News, the Assembly Member for the Zongo Electoral Area, Mohammed Abdallah, recounted the heartbreaking moment he arrived at the scene.
According to eyewitnesses, Elisha, who was inexperienced in swimming, attempted to join his friends in the deep waters but was quickly overwhelmed.
Efforts to rescue him were futile.
The police and community leaders were immediately called to the scene to perform the necessary traditional rituals to retrieve the body.
The victim’s body was later transported to the Bibiani Government Hospital mortuary for preservation and further investigations.
Mr Abdallah revealed that this is not the first time the community has experienced such a tragedy at the Amponsah Dam. He advocated for a fence to secure the dam, noting that efforts to get the authorities’ attention to address the issue have yielded no results.
Mr Abdallah appealed for help to prevent further tragedies.
