Music Network, MTV, has revealed that this year’s MTV Video Music Awards will come off at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles on Thursday, September 6.
According to a statement by the network, the choice of the venue, which is the biggest so far, is to give the awards a much spacious and suitable venue and also make it bigger.
Since the inception of the award in 1984, at the New York's Radio City Music Hall, other renowned venues such as the Palms Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas and American Airlines Arena in Miami, USA have all hosted it.
Last year's awards came off at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles and it recorded the biggest audience in the award's history, recording 12.4 million viewers.
Beyoncé's famous onstage revelation of her baby, Blue Ivy Carter, broke twitter’s record with 8,868 tweets per second at that awards which saw Katy Perry walking away with the Video of the Year award for her song Firework.
The almost 28-year history which has awarded some of music’s greatest acts such as the late Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, OutKast, Jay Z and Eminem, had one its worst moments in 2009 when rapper Kanye West stormed the stage to disrupt an award presentation.
Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift's speech for winning the award for Best Female Video for her song You Belong With Me, which spawned the infamous statement "I'mma let you finish."
Nominees for this year’s awards will be announced in July 2012 after which fans will get to vote for their favorites in categories such as, Best Male Artiste, Best Female Artiste, Rock Video of the Year, Hip hop Video of the Year, and Video of the Year.
