Stay away! Government cautions GNA boss

Government has asked beleaguered boss of the Ghana News Agency, Nana Appau Dua to stay away until issues surrounding the workers' agitations have been addressed. Deputy Information Minister, Baba Jamal told Joy News it will be in his own interest and security if he stayed away from the angry workers. The workers are on a sit-down strike following the return to office of the General Manager, Monday morning. He was asked to proceed on leave by the board after incessant pressure from the workers to have him dismissed. But the National Media Commission (NMC) mandated by the constitution to oversee the state owned media institutions annulled the dismissal by the board and asked the General Manager to return to office. His return on Monday provoked the angry workers who announced a sit-down strike after a hurriedly organised meeting. Philip Attuquaye Quaye, Secretary to the worker’s union told Joy News they cannot work with Nana Appau Dua- one they accuse of incompetence and lacking the requisite managerial expertise to move the agency forward- and charged the NMC to make new appointment if it has the interest of the agency at heart. Reacting to the unrest at the agency, the deputy Information Minister Baba Jamal told Joy News’ Dzifa Bampoh the decision by the Board to axe the General Manager is in the right direction. He said given the level of animosity and “open hatred” the workers exhibited against Nana Appau Dua, during a meeting with the ministry it is almost inconceivable for a working relationship to be brokered. He described as unfortunate the emerging feud between the NMC and the Board of the Agency. “The role of the board and NMC must be complimentary rather than antagonistic,” he said, insisting it is the duty of the board to ensure industrial harmony. He said even though the NMC has the powers to hire and fire, the decision by the board was timely and in the right direction.
