The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has announced plans to establish a dedicated sports centre and institutionalise regular health walks to promote the physical, mental and social well-being of its workforce.  

The announcement was made during a health and awareness walk organised simultaneously in Tema and Takoradi to officially launch activities marking the GPHA’s 40th anniversary celebration.  

The exercise brought together management, staff, retirees, their families, union executives and members of the GPHA community in a display of unity and solidarity.  

Addressing participants after the walk at the Junior Club House in Tema Community Two, Mr Tebon Zumah, Director of Port, Tema, commended staff and retirees for their enthusiastic participation and resilience throughout the exercise.  

Mr Zumah expressed appreciation to the GPHA workforce for its dedication and commitment over the past four decades, saying their collective efforts had sustained public confidence in Ghana’s ports and contributed significantly to the country’s trade facilitation agenda.  

He said management was considering making the health walk a permanent feature on the GPHA’s annual calendar because of its health and social benefits.  

He stated that plans were also underway to establish a dedicated sports centre to provide employees with a permanent facility for fitness programmes, sporting activities and other staff engagement initiatives.  

Mr Zumah urged employees to remain committed to excellence in their respective roles to ensure that the Ports of Tema and Takoradi continued to strengthen their reputation as efficient and competitive gateways for trade within the sub-region.  

Meanwhile, in Takoradi, Captain James Richmond Quayson, Director of Port, Takoradi, described the anniversary as a celebration of the merger that gave birth to the modern Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority.  

He said the authority had evolved into a major shipping and logistics hub through the commitment and hard work of its employees.  

Captain Quayson also commended the dedication of staff at the Port of Takoradi, noting that every department remained focused on delivering efficient services to customers.  

He wished staff continued success and prayed for God’s blessings upon employees, management and the board as the authority celebrated its 40th anniversary.  

The anniversary health walks featured music, dancing and health awareness activities, with participants dressed in the authority’s blue, yellow and white colours.
