With less than 24hours to his event, judoka Emmanuel Nartey has threatened to abandon his event of 73kg Judo competition against his Netherland opponent Elmont Dex due his unpaid per diem for the team’s training period in Plymouth for a month.
The United Kingdom based judoka registered for the training tour in Plymouth and decided to join his colleagues in London to enable him to get partners to practice for the event which was agreed on by officials of the Ghana Olympic Committe(GOC).
After a month of practice in London under the supervision of his coach,he has been refused his per diem which resulted in verbal exchanges with the Chief of Mission, Nii Adotey Din Barimah.
Nartey is Ghana’s first ever Judo competitor at the Olympics. He started judo in 1992. In June 2010 Emmanuel represented Ghana and achieved a bronze medal in the 73kg at the Judo World Cup at Margarita Island, Venezuela. In February 2011 Emmanuel secured a seventh place finish for Ghana at the Budapest World Cup.
He won his opening three preliminary round contests in the 73kg competition before losing to Japan’s Yasuhiro Awano, who went on to win bronze. That put Nartey through to the repechage, where he lost to Petro Kuzmin.
