The Tema-Mpakadan passenger train came to an abrupt halt just meters from its destination after its emergency brake was activated, leaving commuters trapped onboard for nearly 45 minutes.
Chief Executive of the Ghana Railway Development Authority, Dr Frederick Appoh, confirmed the incident, explaining that the sudden stop was caused by the activation of the emergency brake. He noted that investigations are ongoing to determine which specific brake was triggered, but technicians have since confirmed that the train remains fully operational.
Passengers, however, described the experience as uncomfortable and frustrating.
Speaking to Adom News, some recounted sweltering in the heat with no immediate way out, while others expressed disappointment that the stop occurred so close to the station.
A few passengers said they were not surprised, pointing to similar hitches reported during earlier test runs of the service.
The incident has reignited public concern over the reliability of the Tema-Mpakadan rail line, which has faced multiple challenges since its introduction.
