President John Mahama has received the report of the Transition Committee on the transfer of the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) from the Ministry of Health to the University of Ghana.
Receiving the report on Tuesday, February 10, President Mahama assured the Transitional Management Committee that the document would be sent to Cabinet immediately for final input and implementation.

The Committee is co-chaired by Professor Aaron Lawson, a seasoned academic and former Provost of the College of Health Sciences at the University of Ghana.
President Mahama commended the Committee for the diligence with which it carried out its work and for completing the task within the required period.
He said UGMC was established to serve as a world-class centre for research, learning and advanced medical care for the University of Ghana and the country at large.

“University of Ghana Medical Centre is our highest quaternary medical facility in this country. Indeed, it’s of world-class standard, and we want to see it maintain that standard both in terms of clinical care and in terms of logistics and equipment,” the President stated.
He added that the government was keen on identifying the most sustainable pathway to preserve and enhance the hospital’s standards.
“We want to find the best path in which we can maintain the hospital at the standard in which it is,” he said.

According to the report, the Transitional Management Committee has recommended a 10-year transition period to gradually wean the facility off government subventions.
The proposal also includes the introduction of performance-based leadership contracts to ensure efficiency, accountability and long-term sustainability.
The transfer of UGMC to the University of Ghana is expected to strengthen the institution’s role as a leading centre for advanced healthcare delivery, research and medical training in Ghana.
