The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) is demanding a 50 per cent increase in base pay as labour unions prepare to engage the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations in upcoming salary negotiations.
According to the union, the soaring cost of living, rising utility tariffs, and increased fuel prices have significantly eroded the real value of workers’ salaries, making it difficult for public sector employees to sustain their livelihoods.
TEWU maintains that only a substantial pay rise can restore fairness and cushion workers against the prevailing economic pressures.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Dr Rashid Pelpuo, has acknowledged the union’s concerns and expressed hope that their demands will align with the government’s fiscal capacity.
He assured that the government will carefully assess the proposal as part of ongoing negotiations with organised labour.
