The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of TUC (Ghana) has announced the suspension of its indefinite industrial action, which began on Monday, November 18, 2024.
The strike was initiated over delays exceeding four years in finalising and implementing conditions of service for members in institutions such as the Ghana Education Service (GES), Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB), Ghana Library Authority (GLA), and public and technical universities.
The suspension follows a directive from the National Labour Commission (NLC) during a meeting held on Wednesday, November 20, 2024.
The NLC instructed the union to call off the strike while engaging with management and stakeholders, with a follow-up meeting scheduled for Wednesday, November 27, 2024, to address the substantive issues.
In a statement issued by the union, TEWU leadership confirmed that consultations were held with its structures to comply with the directive.
"After the necessary consultation among the structures of the Union, regarding such matters, we, therefore wish to announce to our various stakeholders that our industrial action has been suspended.
"It is expected that our cherished members will resume full work latest by Monday, 25th November 2024," part of the statement read.
TEWU urged the NLC to ensure the speedy resolution of its grievances, warning against any further delays by the management of the affected institutions.
“We are counting on the National Labour Commission to swiftly help address our grievances without feet dragging by any of our Managements of the affected institutions, to prevent further disturbances on the industrial front,” TEWU noted.
The union emphasised its commitment to ensuring a resolution to the conditions of service for its members, highlighting that the prolonged delay has left them feeling short-changed.
“Our members are being short-changed with the continuous delay in concluding and implementing the Conditions of Service and this cannot be allowed to continue,” the statement added.
TEWU assured its members of its resolve to see the matter to a final conclusion, expressing determination to secure improved conditions of service and immediate implementation for those affected.
