Three people, two of them minors, have been confirmed dead in a stampede at the La Pleasure Beach in Accra, Easter Monday. The three were part of revelers who thronged the beach to have fun with family and friends but were suffocated to death at the exit point. Some eyewitnesses who spoke to Joy News’ Kweku Botwe blamed the incident on the narrow entry and exit points at the beach, an allegation beach officials have been quick to rebuff. The beach attendant, Fred Afful said the gates are big and wide enough but attributed the unfortunate incident to miscreants who he alleged deliberately created the stampede to rob people of their belongings. He also explained that some people anxiously rushed out of the beach when it threatened to rain. The combined effect of the two incidents, he reckoned, were the cause of the stampede. The bodies of the victims have been deposited at the La General Hospital, with the eldest believed to be in her twenties, with the other two who are said to be siblings, believed to be between twelve and five years old. Medical Director at the Hospital, Patrick Frimpong confirmed the death to Kweku Botwe, adding that 19 others were brought in with varying degrees of injuries, six of who have been hospitalised. He said it is possible other victims of the stampede may have been rushed to other hospitals. Families of the two dead siblings have reported the case at the La Police Station and called for investigations. Meanwhile, three other bodies have been found at the Kokrobite beach near Weija. Two of the bodies, both males, were washed ashore Monday morning. Eyewitnesses who spoke to Peace FM said the third body was floating a bit farther from the shore but could not be retrieved immediately. A relative of one of the deceased – identified as a 25-year-old driver named Bismark Arthur – said his brother left home about 8am on Monday to swim and failed to return.
