Tragedy struck Sefwi-Tanoso in the Western Region, when three people got drowned in a 40-foot well they had dug for one Opanin Kwame Evans.
The deceased are Haruna Bawa, Ben Gyato, and Kwabena Akoto.
Yaw Abanga alias "Yaw Water" Bawa and Gyato had dug the hole for supply of underground water and were caught off-guard when the water started gushing out.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Francis Enor, Bibiani Police Commander, told the Ghana News Agency that as the hole got inundated, the three attempted to pump the water out with a machine but this proved unsuccessful.
Abanga managed to escape to raise an alarm for help.
He said Akoto, who decided to go to the rescue of Bawa and Gyato, drowned in the process.
DSP Enor said the bodies have been recovered and deposited at the Bibiani Government Hospital mortuary for autopsy.
