A Togolese robbery suspect has been referred to the Accra Psychiatric Hospital for a comprehensive mental evaluation after exhibiting signs of coprophagy, a condition involving the consumption of one’s own faeces.
The suspect, Adinda Akpo Abdou Moudjibou, a self-styled businessman residing in Ghana, is accused of orchestrating a series of robberies in Accra’s East Legon area.
According to the charge sheet, on 13 April 2024, Moudjibou allegedly robbed a medical doctor of several valuables, including US$200,000 in cash, a gold waist chain valued at GHS20,000, a gold necklace worth GHS18,000, gold earrings, and a registered pistol belonging to the complainant’s husband.
The incident was reported to the police, and a forensic investigation was launched. Moudjibou fled to Togo following the robbery but was arrested in Lomé by Interpol Togo and extradited to Ghana on 14 May 2024, thanks to collaboration between Ghanaian and Togolese law enforcement agencies.
In his caution statement, the suspect admitted to committing multiple robberies, allegedly with the help of a motor rider and an accomplice identified as Mohammed Djando, who remains at large.
During court proceedings, the prosecution, led by ASP Richard Amoah, disclosed that investigations were incomplete due to the suspect’s erratic behaviour.
“The suspect is behaving strangely as he defecates and eats his own faeces,” ASP Amoah told the court, requesting an order for a psychiatric assessment to determine the suspect’s mental state.
The prosecution also sought permission to have Moudjibou held in the custody of the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) if necessary.
Presiding judge Basilia Adjei-Tawiah granted the request, ordering that the suspect be taken to the Accra Psychiatric Hospital for evaluation and remanded into the custody of the NIB pending further investigation.
