It has been chaotic since users of some social media handles realised they could not log onto their various platforms.
Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram have been rendered unresponsive since 4:00 GMT.
Facebook owns all the three apps, which run on shared infrastructure, subsequently acknowledged the outage.
The company apologised for the incident and said it is "working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible."
We’re aware that some people are having trouble accessing our apps and products. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible, and we apologize for any inconvenience.
