The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has given government a two week ultimatum to re-form councils of public universities.

The President of UTAG, Harry Agbanu, said that the absence of council is causing havoc for the various universities.

“The universities are ready to graduate their students and they are in a fix as to what to do”, he stated.

According to him, the association has spoken to the Ministry of Education but there has been no news as to what is being done to remedy the situation.

He added that “it is unacceptable that for six months now, none of our public university has a council.”

He made it known that the two-week ultimatum proposed by UTAG was to avoid any interference of the academic calendars of the various public universities.

For most public universities, students are to report in August for lectures to begin later that month or in early September and this has got the council worrying.

However, Mr. Agbanu stated that the association’s complains also include government’s failure to provide teachers with the book and research allowance.

In the 2017 budget, government allocated GH₵ 55million for the book and research allowance.

In the two week period, UTAG wants government to also give out the money constituted for the book and research allowance.

The protest, Mr. Agbanu said will go higher if government fails to solve the issue.
