The Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako Atta has asked Ghanaians to be patient with him as he prepares to respond to poor road safety issues at the Madina-Adentan highway that has left 194 dead in 2018 alone.

Speaking Wednesday on the Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Kwasi Amoako Atta stated he is heading to the capital Accra following intense media pressure on government to fix footbridges on the highway that has a 120km/hr speed limit.

“At the moment, I am out of Accra and I do not have enough information on the issues that has taken place over the last four days to make a comment,” he stated.

Mr. Amoako Atta said he expects to arrive in Accra Thursday after cutting short his tour of the Western region.

 “I will study all the issues and the comments regarding the state of the Madina-Adenta highway footbridges so that when I am well informed about the issues I will be able to comment.”

He said he has decided to keep quiet and not make any comment on it until he returns to Accra.

Mr. Amoako Atta revealed he has been invited to parliament to make a statement on the issue “I will make my appearance in parliament to make a statement.”

He advised Ghanaians to wait for information after his appearance in parliament.

The Minister stated that cabinet has called a meeting to discuss deals regarding footbridges on highways. He also promised to make a public statement after cabinet completes deals that need to be done.

The minister explained work on the Madina-Adentan highway will commence as soon as possible. He revealed that government is taking steps to ensure that contractors come back to complete the footbridges.

“Government is renegotiating the deal with the contractors so they can start work,” he told Daniel Dadzie host of the show.

He explained the contractors started work in 2015 but abandoned it because of lack of payment.

In 2018, 194 people have died on the Madina-Adenta highway as at Monday.

On the Super Morning Show on November 5, the Director of Bridges at the Ghana Highways Authority, Yaqub Koray, revealed that the footbridges on parts of the Madina-Adentan highway will be fixed by end of 2019.

The Minister for Roads and Highways, however, said he cannot confirm when the bridges will be completed.
