The Electoral Commission (EC) has dismissed claims by Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu that government has given the Commission some Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs).
Speaking at a Minority press conference on Thursday, the Tamale South MP, among other claims, chided government for supplying PPEs to EC officials while health workers lacked same.
The outspoken MP described this as “troubling and shocking.”
But responding to the legislator, the Commission denied debunked the claim.
The Commission in a statement Monday said it "finds it troubling that the Leader of the Minority Party in Parliament will put out information of this nature without substantiating its authenticity.”
“For the avoidance of doubt, the Commission has not received any protective equipment from the government,” the EC said.
The Minority Leader also criticised government officials for what he said was their “justifying the irresponsible conduct of the Electoral Commission in defying the restrictions imposed by the President.”
He said it was shocking that the EC towed that path even in the face of an injunction secured against the EC's actions by Ningo-Prampram MP, Sam George.
The EC, however, denounced claims by the NDC MP that the Commission “defied the restrictions imposed by the President.”
“The EC would like to state that since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, it has taken concrete steps in adhering to the rules and regulations…therefore has not violated any safety protocols in the discharge of its duties,” the EC said.
