The Director of Research, Gender and Equality at the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has called for the adoption of a robust technical approach in the fight against violent extremism.
According to Dr Henrietta Asante Sarpong, even though the country has not gotten to that level, there is a need for an upgrade.
Speaking in an interview on JoyNews’ The Probe on Sunday, Dr Sarpong noted that the country needs to be working with drones, and the needed apparatus to deal with the global canker.
“The use of technology, in particular, came up at almost every agency that we [NCCE] visited that this time, we need to adopt very robust technological approaches in the fight,” she said.
According to her, although there are some challenges with logistics and staffing, some work is been done on security.
This, she attributed to citizens realising that violent extremism is a problem that requires some attention.
She added that Civil Society Organisations are also playing a major role in communities by educating and creating awareness.
Touching on the porous borders, Dr Sarpong recommended possible and workable strategies and not being completely reliant on a human being.
“Even though we are trying to solve the issue, we are going manual which may not be the best because you have a number of posts along our borders. It is still like that and we have human beings there.
“How many people can be posted at a particular border to mane the place over so many days? And so we need to put in place measures that go beyond having only the police officers,” she added.
She also called for the Ghana Immigration Service and other relevant security agencies to be adequately resourced since intelligence gathering requires a lot.
