The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has called for a peaceful and incident-free by-election in the Ayawaso East Constituency on Tuesday, March 3, 2026.
Mr Mawuli Agbenu, the Greater Accra Regional Director of the NCCE, made the call on Saturday during a three-day street announcement campaign, organised in the constituency by the Ayawaso East Municipal office of the NCCE, to educate the public ahead of the by-election.
The exercise, which commenced on Friday, February 27, involved moving through various communities to directly interact with residents and deliver civic messages.
The Ayawaso East by-election has become necessary following the death of Naser Mahama Toure, Member of Parliament for the constituency, in January 2026.
Five parliamentary candidates are contesting the seat: Baba Jamal of the National Democratic Congress; Ibrahim Iddrisu of the Liberal Party of Ghana; Baba Ali Yusif of the New Patriotic Party; Umar Sanda Mohammed, Independent; and David Akonor, Independent.
A total of 49,966 registered voters are expected to elect the constituency’s representative in parliament.
Mr Agbenu said elections remained one of the most peaceful means of arriving at decisions, but the “desire to win at all costs” sometimes resulted in violence, which undermined national progress.
He, therefore, encouraged residents to cooperate with electoral officials, avoid acts that could undermine the process and resolve disputes through lawful means.
The Director added that whoever emerged winner would seek the development of the constituency and, therefore, deserved the support of all.
Mr Agbenu expressed confidence in the security agencies to ensure a smooth and incident-free exercise, urging them to act professionally, protect the ballot at all cost and handle voters with utmost respect.
He explained that the public sensitisation exercise was aimed at reaching residents across the constituency with key electoral messages.
The Director said the initiative underscored the NCCE’s commitment to promoting democratic values, peaceful coexistence and informed participation in the electoral process, adding that sustained public education was key to ensuring credible and violence-free elections.
The activity was sponsored by the National Peace Council and GOIL, Nima branch, whose support highlighted the collective effort of stakeholders to safeguard peace and stability within the municipality, he said.
Meanwhile, campaigns towards the by-election have intensified, with party stalwarts and contenders storming the constituency to canvass support for their candidates.
Heavyweights such as Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia, National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC); Mr Justin Frimpong Kodua, General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP); and Mr John Boadu, former General Secretary, NPP, have been spotted campaigning for their respective candidates.
Campaign vans accompanied by music were also seen moving through inner circles, while supporters engaged in door-to-door and house-to-house campaigns to solicit votes.
Ayawaso East has been a stronghold of the NDC since 1992.
In the 2024 General election, the late Naser Toure, who stood on the ticket of the NDC, polled 22,139 votes, while the NPP candidate, Mr Zak Rahman, obtained 9,110 votes.
