Police in the Upper West Region have arrested a 38-year-old woman, Abena Martha Maanibeh, for allegedly abducting a one-week-old baby boy and stealing valuables belonging to the infant’s mother at the Wa Market (Kejetia).
According to a statement from the Upper West Regional Police Command, the incident occurred on 10th August 2025.
The suspect, who had been posing as a caretaker for another patient at the Wa Regional Hospital, befriended the baby’s mother, Ms Kwofie Mwinbelle, shortly after she gave birth on 1st August.
Under the pretext of helping Ms Mwinbelle buy baby diapers at the market, the suspect lured her away and took advantage of the moment to abscond with the newborn and the mother’s handbag.
The stolen bag contained a mobile phone, cash, and other personal belongings.
Following the incident, officers from the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU), led by ASP Madam Stella Atukwia, launched an immediate investigation.

Their efforts paid off when the suspect was located and arrested on 15th August at her hideout in the Nuobollie community in the Savannah Region.
The police noted that the baby was safely rescued and has since been reunited with his mother. They were also able to recover some of the stolen items during the operation.
Abena Martha Maanibeh was arraigned before the Wa District Magistrate Court on Monday, 18th August 2025, where she was remanded into custody. She is expected to reappear in court on 2nd September 2025.
The Upper West Regional Police Command has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and protection of residents across the region.
It also expressed appreciation to members of the public for their vigilance and support, which contributed to the swift arrest of the suspect.
