The family of a baby allegedly stolen from the Mamprobi Polyclinic in Accra, is demanding justice and the prosecution of the suspect following the child’s recovery.
The Member of Parliament for Odododiodio constituency, where the incident occurred, has also called for stronger security measures to prevent similar incidents.
The incident which occurred earlier this week, sparked fear and outrage among residents after reports emerged that a woman allegedly posed as a patient and made away with the newborn.
The baby was later found and has since been reunited with its mother, while the suspect remains in police custody to assist with investigations.
Relatives say the baby has developed infections following the ordeal and insist the suspect must be prosecuted to deter similar crimes. They are also calling on authorities to strengthen security at health facilities to better protect mothers and newborns.
Uncle of the recovered baby, Mohammed Sackey, stressed the family’s demand for justice.
“We want justice for this child. The suspect must be prosecuted so this will not happen to any other family again. The baby has suffered, and we don’t want this case to end without punishment,” he said.
The father of the child, Mohammed Agyekum, expressed gratitude to the Gender Minister for her support, but maintained that the law must take its course.
“We are grateful to the Gender Minister for showing concern and supporting us through this difficult time. Her intervention has helped bring attention to this case, and we truly appreciate it,” he said.
The Member of Parliament for Odododiodio Constituency, Nii Lantey Kotey Ashie, described the incident as unfortunate and called for tighter security at health facilities to prevent similar occurrences.
He said he intends to raise the matter on the floor of Parliament and push for a full investigation to ensure accountability.
“This is very unfortunate and should not happen at our health facilities. I will make a statement on the floor of Parliament to ensure that a full investigation is conducted, and measures are put in place to prevent this from happening again. The family deserves justice,” he stated.
Police say investigations are ongoing as officers work to identify any possible accomplices and determine how the suspect was able to leave the facility with the baby.
