Sunu Emmanuella, a student of Ziavi EP Primary in the Volta region won the maiden Ewe Spelling Bee competition held at Taviefe in the Ho District on March 7.

Emmanuella walked away with GH¢1000 educational scholarship, books and other packages.

The first runner-up, Woewoe Nanevi-Mawueta of Kabore School Complex and the second runner-up Darkey Harriet of Knowledge Preparatory School both took home books and other incentives.

The competition, dubbed ‘Yoekpor,’ meaning pronounce it, is organised by Parade Event.

According to the organisers, the initiative aims to inculcate into the younger generation, the need to hold in high esteem, their mother tongue, as it forms an integral part of their identity and culture.

Chief Executive of Parade Events, Marcus Selassie Tibu told Joy News’ Fred Quame Asare that it appears indigenes are no longer proud of the local languages, “and knowing that we cannot change the adult mind, we are targeting the growing generation.”

The next competition comes off in September 2019. Participants will be expected to purchase forms when the time is due.
