Black Stars forwards, Kamaldeen Sulemana and Ernest Nuamah, have headlined Ibrahim Tanko’s Black Meteors 29-man provisional squad for the 2023 U23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The squad is made up of 15 home-based players and 14 foreign-based players. The squad is expected to be pruned to 21 for the tournament to be held in Morocco later this month.
Sporting CP’s Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, FC Zurich’s Daniel Afriyie Barnieh and Salim Adams of FC Cincinnati, who were instrumental in the qualifiers, have also been named in the squad.
Hamburger SV’s Ransford-Yeboah Konigsdorffer, Basel’s Emmanuel Essiam, and Kwadwo Opoku of Los Angeles FC are also in the squad.
The team will leave Accra on Monday, June 12, 2023 for Cairo, Egypt where they will camp for two weeks and engage in series of friendlies before the competition.
The Black Meteors have been training at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence at Prampram ahead of the trip to Cairo.
Last month's group stage draw pitched Ghana in Group A alongside host nation Morocco, Guinea, and Congo.
The tournament is scheduled to start on June 24, 2023, and end on July 8 with the top three teams earning automatic qualification for the 2024 Olympics.
Ghana opens its campaign on June 25 against Congo.
