The Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) is calling for an investigation into how the two man political parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) financed their election 2012 campaigns.
According to CODEO, the lavish campaign run by the two leading political parties in Ghana is a source of worry.
This call was made during a two-day workshop in the Volta Region to review the 2012 elections.
The Project Manager of CODEO, Dr. Franklin Oduro in an interview with Citi News said: “This country witnessed the massive involvement of funding in election campaigning in 2008 and also in 2012. We also know the kind of accounting report that the political parties submit to the EC [Electoral Commission] do not show the kind of funding that go into elections.”
He expressed worry that if Ghanaians are not told the funding, “we cannot do proper auditing and proper accounting and if you don’t know who is funding political parties, you can’t be sure whether the source of funding is legitimate and whether we can trust the people who we are entrusting the leadership of this country.”
Dr. Oduro added that critical analysis should be made about financing of elections in the country to boost accountability and transparency.
