Residents of Oblogo, a suburb of Accra, fear they may soon begin to contract some dreadful diseases if city authorities do not come to their aid soon. According to the residents, toxic liquid from the Saba landfill site continues to seep into their homes, causing a serious stench in the community and leaving them at risk of contracting diseases. Joy News’ Abena Oppong, who visited the community confirms a black stinking leachate from the Saba landfill site is running on the streets into people’s homes. Tankers carrying more of the toxic leachate also discharge their contents into the Densu river through a canal, she noted. Residents say the stench from the leachate is unbearable. They say the Densu river has become completely polluted. A resident recalls how the polluted river killed her dog after falling into it. “It creates fear, if you have a child playing around [the river] it’s not comfortable and you can’t always keep your child inside,” another resident told Joy News. Residents say the situation gets worse when it rains. Joy News has also gathered that an 8-year-old child has been diagnosed with a “strange” water-related disease by the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. The father of the child told Joy News the boy is unable to go to school as a result of the sickness.
