The parents of a 15-year-old Achimota Senior High School student are heading to court to challenge a decision by the school to allegedly drive the student out of its boarding house on grounds of ill health.The school is said to have discovered the girl’s status as a sickle cell patient and asked her to continue her tuition as a day student.But the girl’s father Justice Saah has rejected the school’s decision, resulting in a misunderstanding between the girl’s parents and the school.Joy News has learnt that the girl has not been to school in the last two weeks.Eric Tieku, lawyer for the girl’s family told Joy News’ Fred Smith that “as I speak to you now, the girl is at home because they’ve asked her to bring her father because of this issue.”According to the lawyer, the father of the girl is not ready to bargain with the school on the matter because the school does “not have the power [to deboardinise the girl and] there is no law in Ghana which says that sickle cell students should be deboardinised.”Eric Tieku said if the school thinks there is a difficulty in dealing with the student’s condition, “they should have discussed with the parents and not to deboardinise her; in any case sickle cell is not contagious.”He said the student has been in the boarding house for some years now and believes that the issue needs to be discussed and handled properly and if “by the end of this week the matter is not resolved we will go to court.”
