AshantiGold SC on Sunday made a decade-long return to continental football with a bang after pipping Renacimiento Club of Equatorial Guinea 1:0 in their first leg CAF Champions League tie in Malabo.
Midfielder Jonathan Quartey scored from a long range free kick in the 55th minute to give the miners a hard fought win away to the Equatorial Guinean side.
Ahead of the second leg tie in a fortnight at Obuasi the vital away win was a good cushion for the miners. A draw in the second leg at the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium on February 11 should see AshantiGold through to their next game, however the Obuasi lads say they would take their games one match at a time and press for a win.
After a barren first half in which Renacimiento struggled to impose themselves on the game, AshantiGold began the second half on a fast note, throwing away an early penalty.
Attacker Lamine Nasir had his kick pushed back into play by the home side’s goalkeeper.
But their persistence paid off 10 minutes into the game when Quartey delivered a long range shot that zoomed past everyone into the net.
Asante Kotoko, Ghana’s other representative in the Champions League play Gambia Port Authority in the first leg at Obuasi on February 3.
The return in the Gambian capital Banjul, will be on February 11.
