Delegates in the National Democratic Congress parliamentary primaries in the Tafo/Pankrono constituency have elected Sahmudeen Mohammed Kamil to represent the party in the 2020 general election.
Official figures released by the party's electoral commission on Saturday indicate that, Mr. Kamil got 475 votes, while his contender, Mr. Alhassan Abubakar Umar pulled 314 votes out of the 792 people who turned out.
While this was his contender’s second attempt in the parliamentary primaries, Kamil has won the ticket at his first attempt.
Many within the party at the constituency had predicted a difficult contest for Kamil but by the close of the day, he pulled more than half of the total votes cast.
Mr. Kamil admitted it was tough trying to sway delegates who had already made up their minds. He paid tribute to the effort of his team for mapping out winning strategies and also helping to counter misinformation.
"I had sleepless nights havign had to deal with a lot of things at a go," he told JoyNews. Kamil said his attention is now to win the seat from the governing New Patriotic Party.
"Our party wants to succeed in 2020, we shall continue with the work that will get them that win." Kamil says.
Mr. Kamil is graduate from University for Development Studies and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology respectively. He studied Bsc. Chemistry and LLB.
