Nicholas Quansah won the sportsman of the year award as Fafali Quashigah won the sportswoman of the year award at Ubora 2019 which took place on Friday at the Unique Floral Prestige Court in Tema.

The sportsman and sportswoman of the year awards are for Ashesi University students who have actively participated and contributed to sports in the school.

Nicholas Quansah who is the captain of the Ashesi football team enjoyed a fruitful year as his team Kasanoma won the Ashesi Premier League last season without tasting defeat, and are on course to defend their title as they lead by five points halfway into this season.

The Kasanoma midfielder beat teammates Benjamin Darko and Cecil Hudson as well as basketball sensation Samuel Fordjour to win his first ever Ubora award.

Quansah, a Management of Information Systems student believes the award was a special icing on the cake for his enormous contribution to sports in Ashesi University over the past year.

“I learnt from those who were ahead of me because they were better than me. That knowledge that I got from learning from them helped me to do more. So I became the captain of the school team, captain for Kasanoma and coach of Kasanoma girls,” he told Joy Sports.

Fafali Quashigah is a second year student who doubles as winger for Kasanoma girls and a shooting guard for the Ashesi basketball team. Off the pitch, she also serves as the Public Relations Officer of the Ashesi Premier League.

Quashigah’s incredible rise in sports saw her fend off competition from fellow basketball teammate Carine Iradukunda, two time winner of the sportswoman award Nana Ama Ayenor and current top scorer of the women’s league Elizabeth Chinenye.

The Kasanoma girls winger who is a Business Administration student knows that winning the award comes with extra pressure and is ready for it.

“I hope I win the sportswoman of the year award again. Being the incoming sports chairperson will push me because more people will know that I am involved in sports and that might be the reason I win it again. No matter what happens, I will still play sports because I love it and I won’t stop playing. I hope I get better and I am trying to get better.”

This was the ninth edition of the Ubora awards, an annual ceremony that rewards excellence on the Ashesi University campus.

The sportsman and sportswoman of the year awards were sponsored by Joy Sports.
