The Anglican Diocesan Development and Relief Organisation (ADDRO), a non-profit organization of the Anglican Church has appealed to Ghanaians to protect and preserve the environment in order to curb the problem of perennial floods in the country.

Executive Director for ADDRO in the Upper East Region, Emmanuel Tia Nabila made the clarion call when the organization with funding support from the Episcopal Relief and Development, donated some relief items to 213 victims of the recent floods in the Upper East Region.

The donation was made at Chuchuliga in the Builsa North District, where many people lost their homes and properties in the recent floods.

The NGO is implementing a project called the Early Childhood Development Project at Chuchuliga – the reason for which the area was also chosen to present the relief items.

Mr. Tia Nabilla advocated for the protection of children which he said is one of ADDRO’s core mandates as an organization.

“It is an expansion of a program we have been implementing over the years – the integrated community case management for malaria, diarrhea and pneumonia. And our target is to help this vulnerable group of our population”, he said.

The Upper East Region records perennial floods almost every year due to torrential rains between the months of August and September, often coupled with the spillage of the Bagre dam in Burkina Faso.

ADDRO is advocating for attitudinal change in managing the environment by way of planting trees to help mitigate against the adverse effects of climate change.

The items donated to the flood victims include bags of maize, bags of rice, soap, bags of gari and second-hand clothes.

In the company of the ADDRO officials was the Anglican Bishop for Tamale Diocese, Right Reverend Dennis Tong, who used the opportunity to pray for the flood victims.

Upper East Regional Operations Director of National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), David Mbah who received the items on behalf of the victims expressed gratitude to ADDRO for the support.
