A Ghana-based nonprofit organisation has teamed up with the Australian High Commission to construct a 10-seater sanitary facility for cured lepers in Ho in the Volta Region.
Thre Mental Health and Well-Being Foundation (MHWF) in collaboration with the Australian High Commission, presented a cheque for GH₵90,789.00 for the project.
The initiative is expected to solve the occurrence of insanitary activities, including open defecation due to the unavailability of enough sanitary facilities to serve the cured lepers and their relatives at the Ho Leprosarium.
The Leprosarium situated at Godokpui off the Ho-Aflao road, currently houses over 100 cured lepers from the Volta and Oti Regions.
The Treasurer of the Foundation, Dr. Yaw Amankwa Authur, said that among several needs of the cured lepers, a healthy environment is paramount, hence the need to provide a good toilet facility to encourage healthy living among the cured lepers.
”Measures have been put in place to make sure that the project will not be left idle, it will be monitored to make sure it is always in good shape so that it will be a sustainable project for them," he said.
The Assemblyman for the Blesam Electoral Area, Anthony Kofi Bruce, who appealed for the facility, expressed gratitude to the donors and promised to ensure the facility when completed serves its purpose and ”will be maintained to stand the test of time”.
The project being undertaken by Hayford Plumbing Construction Limited, is expected to be ready in three months.
