Ghanaian Security Agencies are investigating the theft of a number of passports, a laptop and other items belonging to a delegation from MTN, title sponsors of the 26th MTN African Cup of Nations 2008 (AFCON).
The team and some journalists from South Africa were in Ghana for the opening ceremony of the soccer fiesta and to witness the opening match between Ghana and Guinea.
A statement issued by the Group Corporate Affairs Executive, Nozipho Bardill, and released in Accra on Tuesday said “MTN fully appreciates the prompt response of the Ghanaian security agencies to investigate the theft,” which occurred in a hotel in Accra.
"This unfortunate and isolated incident in no way affects the enthusiasm and commitment of MTN for the AFCON and our commitment to the success of the tournament in Ghana,” it said.
The delegation left for South Africa on Monday night as scheduled and are expected to be back in Ghana for the finals of the tournament.
